One of the most common questions speed golfers get is, “What clubs do you carry?” While many opt for four or five, I’ve embraced the minimalist approach: two clubs, and here’s why.
It all boils down to one word: freedom.
We’re born to run. It’s in our DNA. Efficient movement is key, and lugging around a bag of clubs, whether five or fifteen, is the antithesis of efficiency. One club would be ideal, right? But what if it breaks mid-round? (Trust me, it’s happened!) Two clubs offer a crucial backup without significantly impacting mobility. With my “Silo Shadow” system (more on that another time), the second club is practically a shadow of the first. Adding more clubs introduces a new complexity to managing and carrying them while running.
So, I run with two. I’m free to move my arms naturally, how we’re designed to run. I’m free to get creative with my limited arsenal. I’m free to crank up the pace whenever I feel like it. I’m free to soak in the sounds of nature without the clunking of clubs. Simply put, I’m free.
My two-club setup has evolved over my four years in the sport. I started with a hybrid and pitching wedge, then experimented with a 5-wood and pitching wedge, followed by a 3-wood and 7-iron. Currently, I’m rocking a mini-driver (the BRNR) and a 7-iron.
Now it’s your turn: What’s your take on club selection for speedgolf? Have you experimented with different setups? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
